Why robots can't replace teachers
My opinion about robot teachers.
The Rise of AI and Robots: Will It Replace Teachers?
In today's world, artificial intelligence is becoming ubiquitous. Tools like ChatGPT are proving to be incredibly versatile, and robots are integral to modern industrial processes. While technology is remarkable, it raises concerns about the future of teaching. Could robots replace teachers? Here's why you shouldn't be worried.
I. Lack of emotional intelligence
Teacher's jobs are not only imparting knowledge but also take care of student's emotions. We can program robots to comfort students when they see them crying or something like that, but robots can not truly understand that feeling of sadness. This will be a huge problem in schools (especially highschool because it's even hard for teachers to deal with puberty emotional changes). Human psychology and emotions are elusive to us and I don't believe a machine can grasp them. A robot may misunderstand feelings of students, which can lead to horrible affects. Children's psychology is very vulnerable and easily affected negatively by the environment. AI is not smart enough to find psychological problems inside a student's mind. Many teachers who has human emotions can't find the problems of their students. Do you actually think that a programmed machine can detect what really inside a human? I think not.
II. Can't create real connections
What makes your lessons interesting? People have different answers about it, but I think the connections between teachers and students is one of the possible reasons. Maybe in the past you met bad teachers who don't care about their students or just read the book without real teaching. If you met teachers like them, you probably didn't have any connections with them. Good teachers can build a good relationship with their students, you can share a lot of things with them and they really care about your feelings. Robots can't truly build a real, human connection—simply because they lack emotions. I believe that if a student genuinely feels emotionally connected to their robot teacher, they might be facing deeper psychological issues. Perhaps they are so deprived of care and connection that even pre-programmed words from a machine feel comforting. In such cases, I believe what they truly need is support from society, not encouragement of these artificial, unrealistic relationships. Moreover, the feeling of being comforted and cared for by a real human being is far warmer than anything artificial intelligence can offer. A robot simply cannot give you that deeply human sense of connection.
III. Robots are not humans
I know it sounds obvious, but that's the main reason why robots can't replace teachers. The pure purpose of education is to inspire and help students become valuable members of society. Your literature teacher may not be able to write a great literary masterpiece, but she can inspire you, ignite your love for literature—and from that, you might one day create something truly great. Education is about nurturing the souls of children, guiding them toward goodness, and helping them discover what they truly love and are passionate about. School also teaches us how to behave, how to live with integrity. A machine does not possess enough humanity to teach a human how to be human. I believe a robot simply cannot fulfill these roles—roles that require a real human presence. Moreover, growing up with an emotionless machine is not healthy for a child’s emotional development. I do not deny that robots can be wonderful assistants to teachers, but they can never replace true educators.
